About Vijayawada

Vijayawada literally translates to "The Place of Victory" in the local language which is Telugu. It is also known as Bezwada or Vidyalawada or Burning city (because of its hotness).Vijayawada is the commercial city of Andhra Pradesh, with an area of 261.88 km2. Its prominence as a major trading and business center has earned it the title of the "Business Capital of Andhra Pradesh". The city has originated on the northern bank of the river Krishna. It is also a major agricultural hub of the state due to its rich hinter-lands in the Krishna Basin. Major irrigation canals from the river Krishna and major power projects such as the Vijayawada Thermal Power Station (VTPS) and Lanco Kondapalli Thermal Power Station make Vijayawada an important economic hub of Andhra Pradesh. It is also the home of education that's why it is also called as vidhyalawada.

The city includes many tourist attractions. APSRTC is running more than 450 city busses in city to various destinations. Some famous landmarks and places to visit in Vijayawada are :

1)  The industrial estate in Kondapalli and Village of Kondapalli :
It is an industrial suburb, is spread over 450 acres (1.8 km2) and is base to more than 800 industries.
a) In addition an 1800MW Vijayawada thermal power project (VTPS).
b) 368.144 MW gas-based LANCO power plant which is under expansion to 768.144 MW are located here.
c) The second largest wagon workshop of Indian railways is at Rayanapadu near Vijayawada.

Kondapalli Fort was situated 16 Km from Vijayawada in Kondapalli village. A 7th century fort on the hill with a three storeyed rock tower was witness to many dynasties. This fort was built by King Sri Krishna Deva Raya. It served as a business center for the Vijayanagara Dynasty. Later, the fort was used as a military training base by the British rulers.

Kondapalli is also famous for its wooden toys popularly called as Kondapalli Bommallu (bommallu in Telugu, means toys). These toys depict images, scenes and characters from Indian Mythology and popular folk tales.

2)  The railway station is located in the heart of the city and is the second largest railway junction in the country. With 10 platforms, 5 entrance gates, several ticket booking counters and escalators, Vijayawada Junction is the busiest station in South India.

3)  The domestic airport located at Gannavaram, about 20km from the city, connects Vijayawada to other major cities. Air India, Jet Airways, Spice Jet, connect the city to rest of India. The Central Government has already assured the state that the Gannavaram airport will be developed on the lines of a big airport.

4)  Vijayawada has a multi-cultural urban lifestyle with strong rural mix. The people are generally courteous and willing to help. The local language is pre-dominantly Telugu, although English and Hindi is also spoken by the educated.

5)  Kanaka Durga Temple is located on Indra keeladri hill overlooking the city as well as the River Krishna. It was built after 12th century by Maharaja Poosapati Madhava Varma, the ancestor of Vijayanagaram Poosapati Kings, according to Vishnu Puranam and is considered the builder of Modern Vijayawada kingdom.

6)  Prakasham Barrage was built across the river Krishna, connecting Guntur District, Prakasham Barrage has created a panoramic lake.

7)  Gandhi Hill is first Gandhi Memorial in memory of the Father of our Nation. At 52ft (16m) tall and built with seven stupas on a hill, this memorial was unveiled on October 6, 1968 by the President of India, Dr. Zakir Hussain. Gandhi Memorial Library, a Sound and Light Show on Mahatma Gandhi's life and a planetarium are the other attractions here.

8)  Victoria Museum was a place for archaeology lovers, Victoria Museum has a carefully preserved collection of ancient sculptures, paintings, idols, weapons, cutlery, and inscriptions.

9)  Mogalarajapuram Caves are said to be excavated in the 5th century A.D. The caves are reputed to be the first of their kind in South India. The idols of Lord Nataraja, Vinayaka and Arthanareeswara are carved here, but none of the statues are available here.

10)  Bhavani Island, perhaps one of the largest islands on any river in India, Bhavani Island is located on Krishna River close to the city. Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) is converting this 133 acre island into an attractive tourist spot and a River-Front Resort. The island currently has some cottages to stay in and offers good adventure and fun sports. Journey to the island by boat is a very pleasant ride.

11)  Rajiv Gandhi Park, created by the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation with great care, this park welcomes the tourists at the entrance of the city with its impressive horticultural network. A mini zoo and a musical water fountain are added to it.

12)  Gunadala Matha Shrine, in 1925, Rf. Arlati, the Rector of St. Joseph's Orphanage at Gunadala, installed a statue of Our Lady and later a church was built and consecrated in 1971, now popularly known as St. Mary's church. Since then the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes became an annual event here, attended by thousands of people. The church is situated on a hillock on the eastern side of the city.

Important things to know about Vijayawada :
  • Vijayawada DOSA makes to Guinness Book of Records. The city hotel owners association got in 30 chefs from different hotels who took an hour to prepare the perfect 38.2 feet long dosa, breaking the previous record (32.5ft) held by Hotel Sankalp of Ahmedabad in Gujarat.
  • First Theatre of the state "Maruthi talkies" was built in the year 1921 at One town.
  • Vijayawada has the second biggest and busiest bus terminal in the Asia, It was inaugurated on 23 September 1990.
  • Dr NRS Government Ayurvedic College was established in the year 1956 and is affiliated to NTR University of Health Sciences.
  • The NTR University of Health Sciences is the first medical university in India (It started functioning 1 November 1986).
  • The first private engineering college in Andhra Pradesh, Velagapudi Ramakrishna Siddhartha Engineering College.
  • The first college built in Vijayawada was SRR & CVR Government College
  • Andhra Loyola College was established in 1953 with Rev. Francis Theo
  • The Jawahar Lal Nehru Auto Nagar Industrial Estate in Vijayawada is one of the largest hubs of automobile industry of Asia (There are about 1500 automobile accessory units in the city and near about 100,000 workers are employed in these industries).
  • One international cricket match was played between India and West Indies on 24 November 2002 at Indira Gandhi stadium.
